4/16/16 - Thunder in the Sky

My husband and I attended the Columbus, GA air show on Sunday, 4/17/16. As a 51st birthday present, my husband took me on a Huey ride. He had ridden on them while in the military, but I had never done so. It was AWESOME! It was a chilly, windy day, so it was cold inside as the doors were open; it WAS AMAZING! I couldn't stop smiling from the time we took off, until we landed. (WAYYYY too Soon). The entire staff and crew were VERY professional, and informative, as well as extremely welcoming. I even have a great picture of my husband and I, after the ride, standing in front of the Lucky Star helicopter, with Pilot "Doc" Holladay giving a "thumbs up".

My family flew in the Huey this morning at the Columbus Air Show around noon. We were the first to take off after the skydivers. We had a Great flight. Our little girl is still talking about it. Art V. gave her a custom dog tag.

What a great time I had at Sun and Fun this past weekend at Lakeland, Fla. The highlight was the ride in the HUEY which fulfilled a long time dream. I was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the Army through the LSU Army ROTC Program, but only completed Armor Officers Basic Course as there were too many 2Lts. because of the VN build up. My older brother was with the 101st in VN and tells me the HUEY's saved his troops lives often (reference the book Ripcord 101st Under Siege). I had a great visit with Art Villareal (Ozark, AL) of AAHF and he represented your organization with class and distinction...I am now a proud owner of one of his AAHF HUEY medals. Thanks for providing the wonderful memories of the most exciting aircraft ride ever (I am a private pilot and have had some exciting rides, but the HUEY is #1). Thanks again.

I read in the newspaper Saturday morning that the "Lucky Star" helicopter was going to be at the air show. I called my son and said "That sounds like my old company!" He said "Lets go see if it is!" So I attended the show with my 25 year old son, and I was amazed to see Huey 624 from the 61st Assault Helicopter Company.  My first experience as a helicopter gunner was in Vietnam, on 624. i was so surprised to see a helicopter from my old company 61st. Then when I saw the tail number 624, I couldn't hold back the tears. I got very emotional and was so proud to see the helicopter again after 48 years.

Bill from the AAHF allowed my son and I to take pictures on Saturday. We went back Sunday and actually flew on it, after 48 years. My son and I sat in the gunners seat that I had sat in so many years ago. What a Blessing - Bill, Fred, Art, and John , and all involved made me feel so special, and for the first time they made me feel WELCOME HOME. Thanks AAHF for making a once in a lifetime memory. God bless all of you.

P.S. In Vietnam, I flew on 2 other Hueys and finished my 14 month tour on gunships. Bill spent a lot of time with my son and I; it was amazing. He took a lot of time explaining the operation. I will always be thankful for his time and his caring attitude.

I have had a helicopter flight on my bucket list for awhile. Never thought it would happen aboard the AH-1F Cobra out of Falcon field. My pilot Mark gave me an awesome flight that I will never forget. Congrats to everyone involved in this program.

I am a 2600 hour helicopter pilot. This is one of the best causes I've ever donated to. You guys and girls do an incredible job . . . I saw you were going to be a Tico Warbirds and yes I flew my own ship in and made another donation for another ride . . . whenever you are nearby, you can count on your wingman. Hope to see you soon.

I was blessed to be able to not only experience flying on a Huey, but to make it even more special, I was able to experience this with my grandson (12 yrs) and step granddaughter (13 yrs) as well as a Life Time Member of the Foundation. This was my granddaughter's birthday gift and she stated she was certain that no other gift she could received would possibly compare to the ride in the Huey. The crew were professional and friendly which made the complete affair most memorable and enjoyable. My grandchildren asked upon landing when they could do it again! I want to say thank you for making this possible for us all.

We rode with you guys at Tico: myself, my 6 yr. old daughter Jade, and my 7 yr. old grandson Jonathan. May I say it was one of the best flights I've taken--but to see the look on their faces was priceless. Thank you sooooo much. If you guys come back next yr, we will be there for another killer ride.

Yesterday my boyfriend and I got the chance to take a ride on the Huey at this Airshow. It has been something we have wanted to do for a while, so we finally did! It was amazing. We were debriefed on what we had to do, and everything flowed easily. The ride---priceless. We had a "guide" in the back with us telling us which ways we would be going during turns and what not. It was one of the best 8 minutes. I also loved how after the ride, they gave a photo opportunity, you gave Ben your phone and they would take some of you and your company in front of the heli. So fantastic. I would recommend it to everyone. Next year we hope to go on the Cobra. Thank you for a fantastic flight!

Never in my life did I ever think I would get in a Helicopter much less a Huey and especially one who has seen its share of battle for our country. I had the pleasure of meeting all of you at the members meeting and the man who actually sat in the same gunner seat as I did years ago. Other then,,, being freezing up there it was awesome experience and can't wait to do it again and to experience the Cobra as well. I am so glad to be a member of this organization and hope that I can also contribute the way all of you have so brilliantly!! Thank you and see you soon!

Tim flew in the Cobra with Rick. He had the first flight of the day and was really excited. My of our Dad's worked at Ft. Rucker, AL on every kind of helicopter that came along starting in the early 1960's. We flew in their honor and memory. All of the crew were so accommodating and friendly. They really topped off the day of flying. Tim's pilot explained everything about the Cobra to Tim's delight. I had requested one of the gunner seats and got the right side. They left was taken by a Vietnam Vet who had flown in that seat. Felt honored to be on there with him and his son. Perfect weather and a great day all the way around. It was such an adrenaline rush to feel the engine start up and then the initial hover! Wow. I'd do it again in a heart beat!! Everyone should do it.

I want to take this time to thank you for a wonderful experience. Although I saw Cobras in action while in Vietnam I never knew how much of a rush it is to actually fly in one. Your organization certainly has its head on right as our visit could not have been better. I want to thank Christy for getting me started with paperwork; also Glen from Michigan who made me feel very comfortable during our visit, what a great guy, and of course Bruce the Cobra pilot. Bruce did an amazing job not only flying but his narration of the flight and his knowledge of the machine was great. I also want to thank you for the intro chat we had on Friday. That night I had a hard time sleeping I was so cranked up about Saturdays flight! Well worth it. I have already told others about it, hopefully they will want to get the same rush I did. Thanks for everything. Keep them flying!

My wonderful wife gave me a gift of a ride in the AH-1F Cobra Attack Helicopter for Valentines Day. Being a proud supporter of our armed forces, this was definitely a bucket list event. The pilot for my flight was Bruce and he was amazing! He didn't just fly me around, he taught and demonstrated the capabilities of the Cobra. The front seat of the Cobra was the best front row seat of any and all front row seats. I had a incredible views in every direction and on some of the maneuvers........was out of this world. I highly recommend! Thanks again for the amazing experience and we look forward to being a supporter of the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation.

Mere words cannot express our gratitude for the incredible experience that our family was able to share with the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation (AAHF) during our visit to their hangar. We drove four hours from Huntsville to celebrate our Son’s thirteenth birthday with the gift of taking a ride on a Huey. The experience was more than just the helicopter ride, which by itself would have been more than enough. From the initial pre-flight briefing to disembarking the helicopter after the flight, the gentlemen who keep these machines flying for all to enjoy are a pleasure to be around. They made us feel like we were part of something larger than just a ride. When we toured the hangar, each of my boys was able to sit in the pilot’s seat of the Huey as well as the gunner’s seat in the Cobra. They answered all of the many questions that were asked and even took the time to explain in detail how different controls and aspects of each of the helicopters functioned. We learned so much about the helicopters and because most of the AAHF team has previous military experience with the aircraft they fly and service, we also learned a great deal about the brave soldiers that served our great country. Both of the boys were allowed to wear their HD cameras to record the flight and we took dozens of pictures both inside and outside the aircraft. So long after the flight was over we will be able to enjoy the memories. If you are looking for an awesome experience that is more than just a ride, then look no further than a trip to the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation.

I just wanted to thank you for the amazing experience you gave my son and I.  My husband is active duty Army and is currently on a 2 year tour of duty in Qatar and Afghanistan and my five year old son misses him greatly.  Yesterday my son not only had the most thrilling experience of his life, but he told me he felt like he was a soldier just like daddy when he was up in the air and it meant so much to him to have that connection.  We would also like to thank all of the amazing people of the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation for their service to our country and for keeping military history alive through their work.

I thought I would bring my mother (82) to the fair because she enjoys funnel cakes and playing a few games.  She saw the Huey and was instantly attracted.  She asked if we could fly in it and I said we would have to go check and saw that we could and there was no turning back at that point.  The pilots and assistants were so awesomely friendly and encouraging that it just made the whole experience that much better.  They offered to take pictures, field questions, and help Mom in and out of the bird.  There is no need for me to call her tonight to check on her, I'm certain I will not get through.  She will be busy on the phone contacting friends and relatives to tell them about her day.  The cost is reasonable and we both enjoyed it immensely, thank you!!!  Check off that item on the bucket list.

It has been almost a week since the flight I was on in the Huey helicopter but every time I think of it the full rush of adrenaline and emotions come right back.  As another commenter said, for many of us civilians the Huey is a symbol of the Vietnam War: the distinctive sound of the rotors, the crew chief and ground crews rushing men and materials on or off, and the pilots at the controls flying with calm intensity and professionalism amidst chaos.  The group of men from the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation at the Stuart Air Show gave us a glimpse of all that and more.  To anyone so fortunate to have the opportunity to ride along with them at one of the many events they fly at I can't recommend it enough – just hold on to your seat because they give you quite a ride ! Thanks again guys!

Just exhilarating!  The eagerness mounts as you are watching the Huey take off and go down range until they are out of sight.  The excitement increases when the sounds of that familiar Huey’s “CHOP CHOP CHOP” can be heard as they return to the field.  The enthusiasm increases even more as you move ahead in line waiting for your turn to go.  You can see the expressions of exhilaration of prior riders disembarking.  You are told by your escort in pre-flight not to run to get in, but you find yourself wanting to do just that.  You are escorted from the fence line closer to the chopper, your heart races from anticipation, you’re in!  The ground crew double checks, no triple checks that your safety belt is attached correctly and is firmly in place.  The ground crew member moves toward the front of the aircraft, giving the pilot a “thumbs up sign”.  We are up!  A dip of the nose and we are moving at an increasing pace…climbing higher and higher.  I feel the wind the rotor blades are making, pushing the air down, to give us lift.  We pass over the parking lot, spectators are waving feverishly at us…they must know what this feels like.  We pass over homes with people looking up at us, wondering why these people are in this noisy machine…sadly they may never know.  We pass over waterways and beaches in various hues of blue...look there’s a shark!  The pilot makes some maneuvers that stimulate excitement from the riders… like they need more stimulation from this incredible journey.  The flight crew members that accompany us know that he’s in control, and as this may be old hat to them, for first timers…WOW!  We return to the field with a graceful touch down.  As we disembark, the look of exhilaration on our faces greets those that are drawing closer to the aircraft.  It is now their turn to experience the thrill of a lifetime!  Leaving the field, I can hear the rotors… going faster and faster, a new bunch of riders is going up.  I wave feverishly as they climb over head…wishing I was with them.  Just exhilarating!

Took my 6 year old grandson and as soon as we heard the pop pop pop of the Huey, I knew we had to ride.  Thoughts of these heroes dropping in on rice fields in Nam brought heartfelt respect for the young Huey pilots.  The flight was worth every penny and a flight in a Huey is a must at any price. Very professional and well done.

Words cannot express how awesome this ride was!! Why? Because it made me realize how much we owe our military for the sacrifice they make each and every day. Our country is in turmoil now because of the lack of that respect and acknowledgement. Everyone was so concerned for our safety and to make sure we enjoyed the ride! It makes you feel closer to God riding in those "gunny" seats, wind blowing and beautiful blue skies. Not what they experience in war and protecting us by far. Thank you again and we are going next year too. Third time for my 14 year old but first for me! Can you tell?? Love you all, but especially the pilot : )

It was an awesome experience and was very pleased with his reaction to it.  He absolutely loved it!  Nothing like the slap of those blades at full RPM!  I know what it takes to operate these aircraft and I take my hat off to each and every person involved with making this event possible from the maintainers to the pilots and all of those behind the scenes.  Event planners, logistics and sales representatives; I give everyone a lot of credit for all their hard work and their dedication to keeping the aircraft up and running.  Thank you all for this memorable experience that you allowed me to share with my son.  Keep the blue side up and stay safe!

I have wanted to share the experience of rotor flight with my son.  Crewed Hueys in the Army in the 80/90's and now again for the Forest Service.  The feel, the sounds and the smell.... If you've ever wondered or want to honor a vet, there's no finer tribute or experience!  This wasn't one of those pay a lot of money for once around the pattern flights.  We were up about 10-15 minutes!  Flew all over N/W Winston!  Worth every penny!  Glad I got to share the experience of what I do with my son.  Telling someone what it's like to ride in a Huey just isn't the same as "feeling" what it's like.  Get yourself a ride!

I served in the Army in the early 1970's and was station at Fort Rucker, Alabama where Army Aviation is taught.  I was around Huey UH -1 aircraft every day.  This aircraft is the symbol of the Army during this time period.  Since leaving the Army, I have always had fond memories of the aircraft and longed to be able to be in one again. Today I was able to accomplish this.  It was a great ride.  The people were wonderful.  The UH-1h aircraft was in excellent condition, and all of this made a dream of mine come true.  Well worth the price of the flight.  I have spent more money on carnival rides at county fairs than what this flight cost me.  I recommend this Huey flight to everyone.  There is nothing better than the experience I had today. THANK YOU.  I will remember this day for the rest of my life.

Words cannot adequately express how much having your crew participate in this awesome event in Forest City, Iowa meant to everyone involved!  What started out as a small venue to give the local Vietnam vets a much deserved welcome home - something they were denied upon their return many years ago - grew into this large gathering of brothers from across the U.S!  What an amazing event!!  It touched us all deeply being able to witness the healing process begin for so many with some finally being able to share stories with their families for the first time and the reunions with buddies they haven't seen in years.  Your crew in Forest City was so awesome to work with!!  Having them stay to finish up rides for many that waited in lines a long time was a testament to their character & dedication to their mission!  Great job guys & gals!  It was indeed an awesome event & you all played a huge part in making it a great success!

My 9 year old grandson and I went to the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Event, held at Forest City, Iowa August 26-30, 2015.  We went on 8/30/2015.  After viewing the exhibits and being truly welcomed home, I had to ride the Huey helicopter.  He went with me at @1630 hrs. on #354.  While I thought it was great, he was scared.  But later said he'd do it again.  There was a young lady sitting in the gunners’ seat to the left of me.  She held onto my left arm the whole trip and apologized for doing it.  I told her I hadn’t had that much fun in years and it wasn't a problem.  The crew members were serious about everyone's safety and explained things in detail.  I am glad to have had the experience after 40 years.

My wife and I took the opportunity to ride in one of the Huey's that was flying in Operation LZ on Saturday.  We rode in the gunners well and it was an experience of a lifetime.  It was especially meaningful because two of my friends spent their tours flying a Huey and as a gunner, the one friend went on to fly the Cobra and then on to a test pilot in the Apache.  Thank you again!

I actually first met up with your group in Oshkosh at AirVenture on Friday, the day before.  That was a static display but I got a chance the climb into the pilot seat.  That only added to my anticipation! The ride on Saturday at Fly Iowa absolutely thrilled my wife and I.  We were riding in the "dust off" air ambulance, open door and facing out!  We got out and around local landmarks like Clear Lake and the pilot gave us a great idea of what the Huey could do.  I have another chance in a month to ride again at Operation LZ in Forest City IA and I will surely take it.

Great flight did not stop grinning the whole ride. I got lucky and landed a gunners seat. Wished the fight would never end. Would love to go again some time. Something I can cross of my must do list. Might even look into learning to fly.

During Fly Iowa 2015, I took the chance and rode on the Huey helicopter!  Wow, what an amazing experience.  I was the seat closest to the door, and flying high above the ground, with no doors separating me and the ground was such an incredible experience.  I'm so glad Sky Soldier can give an experience like this to everyone.  All the volunteers were friendly, and willing to answer any questions, and told us what to expect on our ride.  I would definitely recommend riding in one of Sky Soldier's helicopters, you won't regret it!

I want to thank the crew at the Helicopter ride the "Sky Soldiers" for their care and concern for my daughter, Serenity Grant who became overtaken by the heat today.  Everyone was so nice and helpful to us. Words can’t describe our gratefulness.  You guys do an awesome job! And the helicopter ride on the Huey was top notch!  Hope to see you all again!

For my nephew's 16th birthday present, we took a ride on a Huey "Comanchero".  What a great ride. We would so do it again.  Another great thing to do while one visits Henry County!  We were lucky enough to be there on the same day as the Sheriff's Youth Summer Camp kids.  Seeing their faces as they got off of "Comanchero" made our experience even better.  If you have not done this, schedule it.  You will not regret it.

I served in Vietnam in the 616th Transportation Detachment attached to the 61st Assault Helicopter Company and was with the original company that shipped out of Ft. Campbell, KY to Vietnam with Huey UH1-H, 66-16624 as part of our original equipment.  I remember this Helicopter when it was brand new and just shipped from the factory when it arrived at the Ft. Campbell airfield in 1967.  Since the 616th was attached to the 61st it was our job as a maintenance company to make sure all of the helicopters of the 61st were kept flying.  Our main test Pilot in Vietnam was CWO W2 Forrest E. Handshaw Jr. whose job it was to test fly every Helicopter in the 61st fleet whenever it came in for maintenance and 624 was no exception.  Can’t say for absolute certain but I most probably flew in 624 on more than one occasion. Great to see it is one of those that survived through all the years.

We were bound and determined to take a ride this year with our kids (8&10)!  We rode one the Huey Helicopter.  It was an amazing experience!!  Our son (8yo) was completely unfazed......and continued to point out everything. The guys flying and giving all the instructions were great!!  They took good care of us and made us feel safe!!  We hope to experience this again in the near future :)

Truly amazing! I had the opportunity to ride both the Huey and the Cobra. They were both wonderful for different reasons and I would love to do it again! Words cannot describe and nothing else compare to the feeling you get as you are lifting up or as the helicopter banked to one side or the other. I loved the feeling of the wind rushing around me while in the Huey. It was refreshing and somehow peaceful. I am so glad we flew with the doors open! The Cobra was a completely different experience but also one I will not forget! The pilot was so polite and informative. The maneuvers were exciting and related to history. I loved every second of it. I cannot thank the entire crew enough for making my first flights in helicopters not just a great memory but an amazing experience!

It's been an awesome day for my husband and I, and our grandson Peyton! Mike is a Vietnam Veteran, 1969, and has ridden in many Huey’s in war zones, fighting the enemy. We flew in the morning, and came back and flew again with our grandson. We all would love to do it again, at the Dayton Air Show!  Thank you all for being so courteous.  It was great!!

I decided to take a ride on a whim on my way home, what a wonderful experience! I'm not only an Air Force Veteran, but I'm also proud to be an Army civilian healthcare provider. As a passenger I now have first-hand knowledge of that love of flight in a helicopter. I can only imagine the love of flight these brave pilots have. To ride in a piece of history was such an amazing honor. All of pilots, ground crew, and volunteers were very kind and professional.

We did an airshow in Meridanville, Alabama over the weekend and the guy in the middle of the photo came for a ride with his daughter. He was going fishing and his daughter said no way and brought him out to fly with us. After talking with him I found out that he flew with my company in Vietnam as a rigger on the recovery team at the same time I was there. He flew out of Vin Long and I flew out of Soc Trang and I am sure that our paths crossed in the heat of battle and we did not know it. It was quite a reunion and he said that no one since he has been home treated him the way that the Sky Soldiers did during this trip. The guy to the left is Donny B. and he flew as my replacement in Vietnam and we never knew it as well. This is the good will that the Sky Soldiers provide and I am glad to be part of them. As soon as the ride was over he was ready to go again. The ride brought back some fond memories for me as well. Thanks, we had a blast.

My Father was a pilot in the Army, serving 29 years. He started out as Crew Chief on a CH-21C, then ended up flying the Bird Dog with the "Black Aces", ended up flying Huey's and the Cobra for several years, then transferred to fixed wing flying the U-8, U-21, and the C-12 for several years. Today I got to fly in the AH-1 Cobra and the UH-1 Huey, and at 46 was able to get a feel for what it was like for my Dad to fly them all those years. The crew and experience was excellent, and I hope to fly again and support the AAHF and keep these birds in the air! Thank you!

Robert "Cobra Guy"

Please forgive me if I get a little wordy but I can’t say enough about my experience Saturday. I'm an ex Cobra T.I. and had not been around a Cobra or any other military aircraft since I got out of the Army in 1990. I rode in both the Huey and the Cobra. The memories that were brought back were priceless! Thank you, CW4 Whitley, for a Cobra ride that far surpassed any flights I had ever taken as a T.I. I will definitely be attending more of your events. I'm going to start saving now for a full ride next time!

I flew on the UH-1 Huey Dustoff. It was an amazing experience. I was a little apprehensive and nervous about the flight as I’m afraid of heights. Without even asking I was placed in the Aircraft where I wanted to be. In the middle of the bench seat. Once we took Flight all of that went away. It was without a doubt one of the best experiences of my life. I wanted to do it in memory of my Father, a Vietnam Veteran, USAF, 65-66. I will definitely do it again. Only next time I want to be in the Gunners seat. Thank you for all you do in Honoring our Veterans and keeping this History alive. And to all Vietnam Vets. thank you for your Service and sacrifice and Welcome Home.

This was my first helicopter ride and it was amazing. I rode in a UH-1 Huey on the left side gunner seat. The price was well worth the flight and the flight was smooth and breathtaking. I hope to come back again and see the aircraft as well as ride again.

It was quite a ride. One experienced something of what it felt like for the soldiers must have felt when they were having to fly in one of these during the Vietnam war. This makes you respect them more than before. Everyone should experience this ride if they have the chance.

Have been following these fine folks for awhile. Finally got the chance to meet and fly with them! Amazing experience, from the folks working the table, to the wristbands, the briefing all were incredible. Everyone involved was having fun. This was my daughter's (12) first helicopter flight, over 1000 for me :-) she loved it! Laughing and carrying on the whole time! This organization is amazing, what they do, even more so. Too bad I'm not in Atlanta any longer, or I would be volunteering with them .. We will be back to join y'all again. She told me we should take her grandpa for a ride in ATL. So we will soon! Thank you so much!

I cannot tell you how much my family and I enjoyed our Huey ride! I was also able to take a flight in the Cobra and it was fabulous.
